second cooling fan???

I have an '87 formula with an lg4 engine. My hayes and gm helm manuals both refer to a secondary fan and secondary fan switch.Should i have a second cooling fan or is the secondary fan supposed to operate the cooling fan after the car is shut off.
There is only one fan in my engine compartment.Any info on this subject would be appreciated.

Mile high, I have an LO3 and it only has one fan. I think only the HO engines had dual fans.
The is a good article in the archives on how to swap to dual fans if you want, but if you are not over heating, you probably don't need to be..bob

You have to have air conditioning to get the second fan.

Thanx rsilver, that's a good article.I know the 350's came with the dual fan set up on the radiator.I was wondering about two seperate fans though. I was told that certain carburated models were equiped with a small secondary fan further back in the engine compartment.Supposedly it was to lower engine bay temps and help make hot starts easier with the carb.Should i have this seperate fan?

Then it is an engine & a/c combo that determines whether you get dual fans. I have the L98 with A/C and I have the dual fan setup. The second fan only comes on when you have the A/C on and your engine temperature hits 235*F IIRC.

I suspect it may be limited to only TPI engines with A/C. Whether you must also have an automatic or it is limited to specific years, I cannot answer that.

Maybe a few others will tell you their year/engine/tranny combo with a/c that have dual fans.

For the time being, L98s with a/c are confirmed.

If I'm not mistaken the LG4 is a belt driven fan and not the electric fans. Your Helms manual probably covers several different models including TPI and is probably referencing a car other than yours.
