Possible Collapsed Lifter....Need Opinions
Ok...so i've been having problems getting my vavles properly adjusted. Mainly cause I can't destingquish the noises under the hood. I know I misadjusted the rockers once, then a second time getting them all too tight. Finally got them adjusted right tonight and found a knock in the upper part of the motor. I know it's not the bearings...i've had that knock before and know what it sounds like. After the very last time i adjusted them i started hearing a this knock AFTER the motor was WARM. Same thing today. Also, while adjusting the #1 cylinder exhaust vavle the following happened....after the final 1/4 turn after the noise was gone it knocks once or twice then goes away. At idle it's not very noticeable unless the motor surges. The knock gets worse with RPM's. I found the rod on this cylinder to have scratches on one side of the "ball" on the lifter side of the rocker. I switched rods with another rocker, and the knock happened again in the same place after the last 1/4 turn.
Now....I think and hope it's just a collapsed or damaged lifter, and I hope it didn't damage the cam.
Anybody agree? disagree? other ideas?
Thanks
Ryan

If it is a factory roller lifter I would buy 1 new lifter, 1 new pushrod, and 1 new rocker . Very hard to punch out a factory roller cam. It can be done but it take a bunch of abuse to do it.

if you adjusted a rocker TOO tight it will scrape the camlobe with so much force it willl seize or flatten the lobe.
thats why i think solid cams are so scary, with a hydr. lifter you have always some play, but solids??uhuh!

Yup, a collapsed lifter will sound like a ticking. Exactly the sound of an exhaust leak or compression leak (perhaps a spark plug is loose). Check for leaks, check your rockers for ticking. Worse case scenario, pull the intake and take a look at the lifters.

I've already eliminated it being a rocker noise. I made all the rockers tick/rattle, then tightend them till the tick stopped and another 1/4 turn.
It too loud and metalic to be a injector noise. The noise it definately two metals things hitting in the wrong way, and it's too high pitched and high in the motor to be a bearing.
By process of elimination, the noise started after i had driven the car about 2 miles with the rockers way to tight. Below is the method I used prior to the 2 mile drive.
With the motor off...got each cylinder to TDC one at a time. Then tightened each till there was no play in the rod. What I failed to realize is that it's when there is no up and down play, and not to the point of no side to side play. After getting them that tight...I went another 1/4 turn.
So they were definately too tight.

If you could somehow get a good sound clip or video tape with sound....I'd like to hear it to see if it's similar. Then when you take your cam out and find it's a lobe i'll know that's what it is on mine. There are serious plans for this motor....so I might just start them now. Was going to wait till summer, but might as well get it out and start now.

Wish I could, but I already have it torn down. Just need to pop my oil pan gasket and timing cover and im gonna fix this **** once and for all. Your problem sounds 100% like mine. My motor seized one day and I loosened the rockers enough to get me home. Re-adjusted them at the house and bent 2. Replaced lifters and pushrods and I got this noise that I can barely hear at idle but the minute I rev it a little bit, clack clack clack.

Well I just pulled the cam and I really can't tell. My very back lobe (my lifter that collapsed was the #7 exhaust, so may be it) looks like it has been run down a little and the lobe doesn't look symetrical, one side has more lobe, the other lobes look symetrical, so this might be my problem.
