Gas Fumes

HI guys,
I have a 88 IROC-Z with a 350 TPI in it. I have noticed ever since I have owned it that I get a fuel oder in it when driving in town with the windows down at very slow speeds or idling at a stop light. I have changed the cap and can find no leaks in any of the fuel lines. The car runs great but this is starting to become anoying. I really notice it when after the car is hot and I am getting out of it after parking it. It will have a strong gas oder until it cools down. Could there be a problem with the purge solenoid on it to cause this not to vent the tank? There never seems to be any pressure on the tank cap when I remove it. How do these tanks get air vented into them anyway? Am I just not understanding it or is that a vent underneath down by the rearend? If you guys can help me it would be greatly appreciated because my girlfriend really doesn't like that oder if ya know what I mean. Thanks Dennis

check the charcol canister to see if it's saturated with fuel, good chance it is if you're smelling gas and have no leaks.

Hey Minn,

If you walk around the car, can you tell where the odor is strongest? I've been dealing with the same problem, tried a new charcoal canister, helped a little but I think it may be my filler neck. That seems to be a common problem for our cars. I notice more after going around a turn. If you never have pressure behind the cap, maybe it is constantly venting, hence the odor.

Good Luck,

Ken

MINE SMELLED BAD TOO. I WOULD STOP AND LOOK FOR A FUEL LEAK ON THE INJECTOR RAIL FOR FEAR OF A FIRE. I FINALLY DECIDED THE RUBBER HOSES ATTACHING TO THE CHARCOL CANISTER WERE NOT TIGHT. I ADDED SOME FUEL LINE CLIPS TO THE LINES AT THE CANISTER, AND THE SMELL WENT AWAY.

I'm experiencing the same as Minn and Dutch. I've been trying to figure out what is causing the fuel odor. More noticable when the tank is over 1/2 full. Haven't checked the canister. Will have to take a look. I believe it's the filler neck however. The odor is noticable right by driver's side rear tire. I also have very little pressure when I release the gas cap.
