Sammy,
Sorry. I normally don't edit other people's posts, but you really shouldn't post your entire VIN on the boards. Some people can use the number for less-than-honorable purposes. The first 11 digits are all that is usually necessary to decode whatever information anyone might need on your vehicle. The last six digits are the sequence number, and are useless to anyone except those with bad intentions.

Sammy,
Look closely at the VIN on your dash panel again. The number should start "1G2FX871...."
The "A" you listed in the fourth position might actually be an "F". If that letter were actually an "A", the following character would have to be either an "H", "G", or "F", none of which designate a RWD 'F' body vehicle.
The numbers should decode as follows:
1 - Assembled in USA;
G - General Motors vehicle;
2 - Pontiac vehicle'
FX - F BODY/SPORT 2 DOOR;
87 - COUPE-2 DOOR SPORT;
1 - Engine type;
X - Check digit;
C - 1982 model year vehicle;
N - Assembled in Norwood, Ohio.
The last six digits are the sequence number generated in the assembly plant to identify the specific vehicle.
Nowhere in the VIN is there a designation about the model conversion to a Trans Am. That specific information is detailed only in the RPO codes. Find the RPO label in your car and check those options and build instructions for more specific information. The RPO label is generally located in the center console, rear storage compartment, or on the left inner fender under the hood.

Yes. Wierd. I don't have the "AX" platform designation in my cheat sheets. Usually the fourth digit is the platform designation, and we all have 'F' bodies, not 'A' bodies (Buick Century, Olds Cutlass, Ciera, etc.). The fifth digit is generally the variation of the platform, like sedan, coupe, hatchback, wagon, etc. A Trans Am is supposed to be coded "FW". A Firebird SE is coded "FX", which lead me to believe that he might have misinterpreted the fourth digit.
Now I'm confused. It's possible that South America has a different designation series, but the car was built at Norwood, Ohio. Go figure...
Then again, maybe things were done a little differently in 1981 and 1982, when it was built.

1982 is when GM started standardizing the VIN along with many other automakers. 1982-1984 Vins are not like ours. 1985 and later vins use the forth digit as "carline" whereas the fourth digit in a '82-'84 vin is the type of belts (in his case "A" being manual belts". Then the fifth character designates the carline. "S" was the base firebird, "W" was the Trans Am, and in his case, the "X" was the Trans Am Special Edition.
Why the "special Edition T/A" has a "1" (173ci V6) is beyond me, but GM has done stupider things.

As GMTech points out, the "W" is a Trans Am and "S" is the base.
The "X" is an odd ball for the S/E and is not really considered a Trans Am. Heck, even GTAs had a "W".
