I went to autozone to get a rear main seal, an i think they gave me the wrong one! the computer gave a choice for a 2 lip and a one lip.... the new one is 2 lip. it seems that the stocker is a 1 lip?

No, acording to the auto zone computer there are 2 kinds of 2-piece rear main seals for 85' a 1-lip and a 2-lip kind I dont know what i need, but this new one looks different from the one i took out.

There are 1 lip and 2 lip designs. Part of the reason for them is.. if you happen to have a stock 2 lip and it has a bit of ware, the one lip desing is offset from where the major lip on the 2 lip is.
There for it rides on a different part of the crank shaft not in a possible grove worn by the previous seal.

They are functionally equivalent.
Don't fret over this slight appearance difference. Different strokes for different folks. There's always more than one design solution. Two paths to the same destination. The OD's, ID's and groove widths are the same, that's what's important. The material type is a lot more important than the detail configuration of the lips.
Go in piece. May the Farce be with you. Live long and prospect.

The big, inner lip seals the oil inside the engine. The smaller, outer lip keeps dirt & grim from getting to the inner lip.
The functional usefulness of the outer lip is realatively insignificant.
