just bought some 416 heads
ok guys i just bought some 416 heads for 50 bucks thier complete and don't look to bad. but i will be porting these heads i've done a couple searches and saw alot of people said it's a good head after being ported and compares to a vortec in flow.
my question is what were some problames with portign the head?if any. and what should i be careful of
this will be ona 350 that i'm building up stock valves will be used for a while i just can' afford new valves and mechining and seats

No real problems, just don't go hog wild in the runners and punch through to the water jacket. Shouldn't happen anyway. Follow the link at the end of my sig.
This might be a good starting point:

Bull has a lot of good information in his thread. Take the time to read through it.
I'd suggest at least installing screwed studs before installing the heads. Even if you don't increase the valve sizes, the more stable rocker studs are going to be an added measure of safety. You practically stole the heads, so an extra $50 for studs is a bargain.

Either cut you expectations in half or save up some more money and get the larger valves and a new valve job.

yeah .. i know about the valve sizes but for 5-6 bucks a new seat and me being on a tight budget plus the mechining and the new valves .. i'm just gonna do some porting and vlave job done on them... i have all stuff needed to to a 3 angle valve job and reface the valves. so i know i wont see anything like vortecs will i go with a 1.9 valve

You don;t need to install new seats in the heads to go up to 1.94 x1.60" valves.
If you have to portable equipment and seat cutting stones to freshen up the existing valve job, you have all the equipment nessessary to cut in a new valve job for the new larger valves on the existing seats. The new valves come ready to drop in unless you want to back cut them.
The old stock valves are probabily not servicable reguardless. The margins are too thin.

I created the templates from a set of '416s I ported, then verified them on a second set. If the castings you are working with don't suffer from serious core shjift, those templates should be accurate without danger of striking oil or water. Just print them to scale (using the handy, included scale) then cut them out and transfer them to a more rigid material, like card stock or shim stock.

A set of used, servicable oem 1.94" valves shouldn't be too hard to find, and you have some 1.5s already right?
I might even have some, but if I don't, you could probably get some free if you ask around.
But even a new set is only $50 or so.

Any flow numbers from that head?
Do you have any other templates for different castings that you care to share?
For that matter, I’ve always wondered how people got accurate templates without cutting a head down the length of the port that they’re making a template for.
