ZZ4 versus LT4

if building a daily driver, which cam would you use in a carbed 350 (600cfm) with vortec heads? I've currently got 2.73 open and an S10 torque converter, but with my tax return I'm going better (3.42 posi ideally)... ZZ4, LT4, or other?

Any advice given would be awesome.

The ZZ4 and LT4 are different animals, make sure you know what you want. They put out the same power (theoretically) but I've seen stock LT4 Firehawks run WICKED stock times. Definetly mid-high 12 second rides, and highly underrated. I would count on the LT4 putting more power down. Others may have different opinions though.

Also if you're buying a complete motor, remember the LT4 is a Gen 2 fuel injected SBC, and all the wiring and computering that go with it will need to be installed, while the ZZ4 is an old school gen 1 carburated (sp) SBC.

It's all up to what you're looking for. Personally if I had the cash I'd go for the LT4 over the ZZ4 any day, but maybe I'm biased (see sig). Either that or get an LS1

I think he is actually talking about just buying the cams that would be in either an LT4 or ZZ4. From what I have been told your best bet would be to buy neither. Both of these cams are pretty mild. Granted, going to the LT4 (hotcam) will produce more power than the zz4 cam but it's still not that great. Check around with cam manufacturers and you can get a better cam for the money that will produce more power and run a lot better. You'll be more happy in the end.

Anybody have any suggestions on which cams to look at?

Stock Vortec heads will need to be cut for higher lift with both of those cams, assuming you mean the LT4 Hotcam. This is your daily driver, so I would say either choice would work well and be easy to live with every day with a decent idle and good vacuum. The Vortecs and the hotcam with the right combination should put you in the neighborhood of 400 HP. Sure there are bigger badder cams around, but it depends on how much you want to live with every day. What's the rest of your combo?

Comp Cams "305" LT1 Camshaft, 220 / 230, (1.5 Rockers) .510 / .510 114 LSA

Remember, the LT4 cam is rated with 1.6 rockers, its .525 with 1.6's. Not sure the lift on the 305 with 1.6's, but I know its more. Like .540 or so.

Slightly bigger than the lt4 hot cam, just as streetable.

Next step up from the CC305 is the GM846, still very streetable and more power than the 305:

GM846: GM Part# 12370846 222/230 (1.5 rockers) .509 / .528 (1.6 rockers) .543 / .563 112 LSA

If your really daring you can come hang with us big boys:

Comp Cams 306: 230/244/.112 - (1.5 rockers) .510 / .540 (1.6 rockers) .544/.576 lift

And if your a real man, the biggest off the shelf cam:

GM847: GM Part # 12370847 232/242 (1.5 rockers) .539 / .558 (1.6 rockers) .575 / .595 112 LSA

They are all streetable. The 305 and Gm846 are very similar and very streetable. The CC306 and 847 are not AS streetable but perfectly fine, I have a 306 in my daily driver.

anybody else recommend the CC305?

sounds like a nice cam. I'm looking for peak hp around 5500.

305 will most likely peak around 5700 just throw a double roller on the car and spin it to the moon. I spin mine to 6500 .

Because people take them out to go bigger quite often . Check the boards on Camaroz28.com, lots of people sell their used 305's.
