gas hog 3=4 mpg help!

My wife drives our 5.0 formula and compained about mileage. I have 2 formula 350s that I drive . I drove hers and at 25 miles It used half a tank. It runs well but smells of gas and shows drippage back by the tank. I replaced o2 sensor and fuel pressure regulator no differance. Plugs don't show excessive carbon . Where is the gas going? Help! thanks for any input,Dave

It's a closed system. If you have gas dripping better get it fixed, thats where the fuel is going-on the ground- not into the engine. Most likely a leak in a line or at the fuel filter. If you dumped that much fuel into the engine it would flat out not run.

Kind of pointless to work under the hood then, don't you think?

Sounds like you might have a broken fuel filler neck.

There's a recall for that on some of these cars; I don't know offhand what years and models, but yours might be one of them. Check the government's database of recalls and see if you're eligible for a new gas tank under warranty.

Otherwise, it's probably one of the pieces of rubber line that hook the tank's metal lines to the car's metal lines.

Thanks, got the car on alift and found small puncture above the heat shield. Fuel would evaporate off the heat shield and never leave more than a few drops at most on the ground. lucky it never caught fire! Thanks Dave
