How hard is it to change a rear axle?
HI , I am about to buy a 10 bolt rear end with posi and disc brakes form a 90 firebird.
I am replacing a 9bolt on my 89 iroc.
How hard is it to remove the old 9 bolt and install the 10 bolt? I have never tried messing with a rear axle before so i have no idea.

It's not too bad, except that it's heavy, and the bolts have a tendency to be a PITA. Although, if yo're lucky your car has never been in a place where they salt the roads, so they won't be rusted in place quite so bad. Other than that, it's not bad at all. You might want to change out your springs and shocks at the same time since it's no more work whatsoever to do the springs (they'll fall out during the process) and the shocks are only about 10 more minutes. Get the Moog replacement spings and the white Monroe shocks, they will really make the car ride and drive better.

Swapping the rear is just a wrenching a little and keeping the rear balanced on the jack. Axles take a little more with the c-clips.

All i can say is air tools, if you got an impact and some sockets, its a breeze, just make sure you soak the bolts with some type of a lubricant so the bolts won't break so easy (if they do) it will save a lot of cussing and breaking crap

Thank you very much for that link. I think it will make me much more comfortable doing this swap. I do have one question though, the 10 bolt that I am putting on there to replace my 9bolt is from a 90 firebird and has posi and rear disc brakes but I dont know if the calipers are aluminum or iron. Does it even make any difference?

They are probably aluminum, but your best bet is to get e-brake cables for the '90 firebird. There are three cables total, you only need both rear.

The axle swap itself is cake; however, doing the brakes (hookups, cables, bleeding the lines) might drive you mad.
