car is chugging ---> timing?
I just got this car a week ago so I'm trying to tune it properly. I had been putting 92 octane in it to pass emissions which it did after replacing the o2 sensor and air filter. After the tank was done I put in some 87 to see if I could get away with it. Well the car lost all power and moreso as it started to overheat. I limped to a gas station and put in an equal amount of 92. It helped the overheating problem and brought back some power but not enough, and now the car chugs.
Yesterday I checked my timing and it was an inch to the right of the tab. I adjusted the timing to specs (with brown wire unplugged) and the car has regained a lot more power. It chirps 2nd gear, but it still chugs. Can I get away with 89 octance?? The increments for octane are so expensive here. Thanks for any help.
BTW: There was a patch of white on the damper stretching about an inch. I used the yellow line towards the left inside the patch as the mark. There was also a thin blank space to the right inside the patch.

I forgot to mention that looking at my distributor cap that it seems as if all the wires should be shifted one step clockwise. To correct the timing I had to move the cap counterclockwise, and now the #8 and #4 spark plug wires on the cap are towards the front. If the timing was set correctly should this not matter?
