So I'm on spring break and I'm supposed to be building my motor, right? Well Michigan decided to get 8 inches of snow and sub-freezing temps all week. Today it was 30 degrees and sunny in beautiful Ann Arbor, so I pulled the heads and cam from the donor 350 (roller) and cleaned it up a bit. I took pictures, but only one is even worth posting since it got dark. I just got inside 5 minutes ago.
You will notice that I am doing this all not in a shop, but in the trunk of a 1986 Buick Park Avenue... Yes, that's right.
Tomorrow I'm going to roll the motor upside down and unbolt the oil pan and change out the gaskets. In the meantime, please marvel at my beautiful dirty 350. What's going in/on it you ask? A cc305 cam, modded Vortec heads, an Edelbrock RPM Air Gap, and an Edelbrock 600cfm carb.

I've always respected people who do the best with what they've got. And I hate it when people say "You HAVE to do it with a engine hoist, and engine stand, and a work bench or it wont work right!" ... true, it's a lot easier with all those tools but an Engine hoist (that i'll probably use only this once) is like 250 dollars. Then a stand, add another 50. Then a work bench... say I live w/ my parents still... will they really want me to get oil and grease all over their work bench? I dont think so!

When I got my truck block, I drove from GR to Ohio, about a 6 hour drive, and dumped it in the back of a 97 Lumina. From there, I did what you did: removed the crank, 7 rods, and 7 pistons (one is frozen). Then it all went to the trunk of my Crapiece for weight. Makes for an interesting conversation starter.

Lots of trunk room.

Long story. Caprice + lotsa weight in it + racing a camaro w/ no engine= someone pushing a Camaro faster than the Caprice can pull it's own weight.

I got the cam in and put one head on today. I didn't put both heads on because I can't close my trunk lid with both on. Anyway, I need to know a part number for some bolts for centerbolt tall valve covers- any idea?

Got a junk yard close? You can go get some new center bolt covers and bolts for under $25 usually. Or just grab the blots, or you could make a trip to a local GM dealership, and tell them what your looking for, and they can get you the parts or the PN for you.

Nice job! That is what we're all about I think... I bought an engine hoist and the times I've used it and lent it out would have payed for it if I actually charged people for it... I also think the "where there's a will there's a way"! The amount of "Big" jobs that me and my buddies have accomplished with out a lift or garage, or tow vehicle is pretty hillarious in my opinion. One of the funniest was transporting my friend's T-bird SC motor in the trunk of my old 88 Caprice. We drove pretty close to and sometimes over 100MPH from his house in Dedham MA (just outside of Boston) through Connecticut (good thing it was early Sunday morning with almost no cars on the road) to catch the first ferry to Long Island NY. Did I mention that the car was packed with my four friends and myself? Lucky for me the Caprice had a 350 and it didn't even flinch!
Sorry for straying from the topic but just thought I'd share that interesting story...
