Exhuast Crossover
Exhuast Crossover
Sorta a Stupid Question, But its not the first time...
The Stock Exhuast gas Crossover "flap" in the passengerside Manifold/ypipe union, When Disconnected from a vaccum Source, DEfaults to what position, Open Or closed ?
The reason I ask this is that I have an Annoying clattering sound Coming right from that location and when I manually acuate the lever, it stops. The car Also Seems to perform Better, Run smoother, ect...
What I want to know is, is this due to the Flap being defaulted closed and I can Manually actuate it Open allowing for proper exhuast flow. After I drive for a while It will Fall back To its default position, So I would need to wire it open I assume to keep it from closing On me.
Anyway, The long and the short of it is That i want it to Be Open all the time, of course, and I belive that it is sticking closed On me.
Any information on the subject is appriciated.
Thanks

If the spring is still good in the vacuum servo, the default is open with the vacuum removed. I removed the line from the temp/vacuum switch on mine when I was running it at the track last summer.
The butterfly has been known to come loose from the shaft on these valves and flip closed. You might want to go ahead and drop your y-pipe and check it out since yours rattles.

Oh, and I think the technical name for it is "Early Fuel Evaporation" valve, or EFE valve. Used to call them heat riser valves in the old days.
Hmm, Well Mine doesent spring anywhere, It goes where I put it, So I suppose its quite possible its in there flopping around w/ exhuast flow.
Thanks, Ill take a look at it.

It should have a spring that holds it open; and the shaft is offset such that exhaust tries to force it open besides. The old-style "heat riser" valve had a thermostatic spring and a weight instead of a vacuum motor.

Don't waste your time getting one of those at a boneyard, they're mostly about like yours by the time they make it there. You can get new ones of those from the parts store, they don't even cost very much, maybe $30 some-odd

Just get headers, and when you do get 'em for a later model FI car w/o that POS.
For now you can do what i did on my 85, remove it, gut it and seal the shaft hole with a bolt.

- Definitely prototypes, high powered mutants of some kind. Too weird to live, too cool to die
