removing rocker arm studs

removing rocker arm studs

i just got a new set of heads (regular cast 305 heads) and i have to put in some rocker studs, so is there a way to pull out the old studs from my old heads or should i just go ahead and order some new studs?

Get a few 3/8-24 hardened nuts, and a handful of 3/8" washers. Stack the washers (or rocker pivot *****, or any suitable spacers) on the stud, start the nut and lube the threads. Start turning the nut and don't stop until you run close to the end of the threads. Restack the washers/spacers as necessary to finish the job.

Once you get one pulled, you'll realize just how little force it takes, and will never want anything but screwed studs again.

Do what Vader said, but if you want to make it a little easier find an a/c compressor clutch tool for the old GM 6 cyl and rotary compressors. It has a bearing in it and the threads are identical to the rocker studs. This way you can crank it out using the bearing, making it a piece'o' cake.
Now if you want screw in studs you'll end up taking it to a machine shop or they will end up looking like a fence row. You can replace those press in studs but you may want to pin them.

i was asking this cause i just bought new heads which are tapped for screw in studs. i had no idea whether stock studs were press in or screw in. so i just checked the threads and ordered ARP 3/8" studs with a 7/16" base (which is what they are machined to). ooh and some summit stamped 1.6 ratio rockers

SSccchwwweeeet. Just screw in the new studs.Also, check the 1.6 rockers because I have yet to install a set that didn't need the pushrod guides cleaned up a bit, you will no doubt have the guide plates that attach with the studs and are probably OK, but check them anyway. Now comes the next question, why are you running 1.6 rockers?, IMO you'd be better off picking out the right cam to begin with, unless you have some other reason that I'm not aware of.

my teacher had this hydraulic tool that was like a bearing seperator... but the washer thing seems easy enough.

well i have a crane energizer that i put in last summer (has about maybe 20 miles on it), which i thought would be good but i was told by a couple people i could have gone with somthing a little bigger. so either pay another $120 for a different cam or pay $20 more for getting the 1.6 rockers.
