egr question
I have a TBI equipped v8. I keep getting the "code 32". I took off the egr valve to have a look at the egr ports and the valve itself. While the valve was closed I could blow air into the intake side and it would come out the exhaust side. It was a very little amount of air. Is this normal? Should I replace the valve? Everything else seems normal. Any help would be appreciated.

How did the port look? Wasn't blocked off with carbon ect?
You can reach up under the EGR valve and gently press the diaphram up/down and make sure it is moving freely. Then have somebody else start the car when warm and feel to see that it moves. Make sure there is vaccum at the port.
It isn't supposed to work when the car is cold, just warm.

It's operation seems just fine. The ports were surprisingly clean, almost completely absent of buildup. I went through all the normal egr checks. Everything seems okay. I'm just not sure what my next check should be. All the lines are in good shape. I've owned 5 third gens, I currently own 2, and I'll be damned if every one I've ever had has an egr problem. What a pain.

Could be the whole problem is the sensor that is reporting the code.
Strange you have had all these EGR problems. I've never ever had one and never owned any other type of car besides an F-body. I shouldn't have said that, I will be cursed with EGR problems now for eternity.

trust me you don't want egr problems. I've been hunting through some GM tech bullitins and it seems like they have had the same problems that alot of people on thirden have. I think I might have a bad egr valve. I tried to a vaccum pump to get the egr to manually open up, but nothing. I'm not 100% sure but that's what I'm pursuing for now.

A GM Tech recently advised me, because the EGR is either Pos or Neg backpressure, cannot be opened by vacuum or pump unless at idle(assume warm). Most must remove air cleaner at any rate which requires Thermac Vac hose also. At Idle, use that vacuum port to EGR valve, careful noting that Idle vac should be about 20hg and it only takes about 5-7hg to operate EGR at cruise when called for. EGR should snap open either to stall or at best idle crappy, after all exhaust gas minus oxygen is being introduced into intake manifold. If it works by this method, into the EGR solenoid and vac systems circuits called for. Good Luck

Since it's a negative backpessure it can be opened by vaccum alone. The positive backpressure types require a backpressure to be placed on the exhaust side of the valve in order to operate. To test my egr I took straight engine vaccum and ported to the valve with the egr solenoid shorted to ground. I then revved up the RPMS to about 3500. I got nothing out of the EGR. Even when I manually kicked the egr diaphram open, the vaccum wouldn't hold it there. I'm pretty sure I covered all the bases, but I'm no expert and I've been wrong more often than right. On the TBI cars there really isn't a whole lot else in the egr circuit to test. There is the solenoid, ECM, vaccum, EGR valve, and checking to make sure the ports are clean. Since I bypassed the ECM by grounding out the solenoid (and the solenoid turned out) I think that eliminates those two possibilities. I really hope I'm on the right track. If anyone knows if I'm doing something wrong PLEASE let me know.

Sounds right to me. I've noticed a few that seem stiff and will not return when pressed gently with just fingers. None of them on my cars fortunately.
