msd iron or crane alum. dist. gear?

i need to order a new distributor gear for an 8366 msd distributor, to run with a tpis zz409 cam, i've heard bronze is no good with roller cams, do i want the msd iron or aluminum crane gears? im thinking if there is a problem that caused my old ones to break, i want to go with the teeth that will break the easiest, so that gives way rather than the teeth on my cam, so aluminum? thanks,
shaun

I was just about to ask the same question. I justtook my MSD 8366 dizzy out and my bronze gear had high wear patterns on it. I am using a comp cams hydraulic roler cam too. I trying to find out f I can put the stock steel gear back on. If I dont find out tonight then I will call comp cams and MSD tomorrow and let yo uknow

im using a zz409, not a comp cam, but i spoke with msd tech support the other day, and was informed all roller cams use a melonized gear, which actually refers to a coating rather than the shape. so as long as you get the .500 inch one, it should work whether you get the comp, msd, or another gear. i wouldnt use a stock one, stock cams seem to use a different gear than rollers do. i ordered the comp cams one for mine. he also told me that the gears need to be properly broken in,and that could have contributed to the teeth breaking. said to drain my oil, put in a cheap filter, put in the thinnest mineral racing oil i could find, run it at 2000 rpm for 20 minutes, then drain it, put in a new filter, and your regular oil.
kind of sucks having to buy another 5 qts you'll only use for 20 minutes, but better than having to do the same job twice.

I bought a bronze gear when I first bought my comp cams roller cam... Then I called them to make sure and they said I could use the stock gear.. I've been using it for several years now with no problems..

I would find out who makes the cam for TPIS, and call them and see what they say. I'm running a comp hydraulic roller, and it takes the regular gear for a flat tappet cam, not a special one for a roller cam. I had a crane roller TPI compu-cam, and it also took a regular gear. That cam actually had a cast gear pressed on the end of the cam.

I just got off phone with comp cams and they informed me that based on my cam(09-000-8) hydraulic roller, that I can use my bronze gear BUT I will not get that much life out of it. He recomemnned my using one of their polymer(plastic) gears. He said my cam is made of of billet and that is the reason for the wearing of the bronze gear. He says the polymer gear will get a wear pattern established and then once its "broken in", it will not waer anymore. He also stated NOT to use the stock gear. Not sure if he meant stock as in the GM one or stock as in the one that came with my MSD dizzy, if their different. Comps polymer gear cost $116.00 OUCH. Now Im gonna call MSD and see what they say about these polymer gears.

Bronze or a hi tech plastic.

It much easier and cheaper to replace a Dis gear, then a pricy cam.

thats what i was thinking when i ordered the crane aluminum/bronze one, i figured the aluminum would break before my cam gear if it came down to it, but i didnt know there was polymer gears. anyone running one of these?

I called MSD today and asked them what gear I should be running withtheir 8366 dizzy and they told me that with my cam, I can either run a bronze one or a melonized one whichis the one that MSD puts on all their dizzys. So, I wil just put the old(new) gear back on the dizzy and go from there. There was no way I was putting the bronze one back on since it was in no shape to be used again.

I just bought a new bronze gear for $18 on ebay. I'll have to keep checking it to see how long it will last with this new cam.
