oil pan probs

i'm trying to replace the oil pan gasket and i have dropped the y pipe and jacked the engine up till it hit the bottom of the car and i still don't have enough room to pull the pan. i'm missing it by a couple of mm. it is quite frustrating. are there any tips to getting this pan of? i heard that the crank should be turned a certain way. does anyone know about this and if so, what position should it be turned. Thanx
