Cutting oversized intake valve seats...how far????

Question:

How far can I cut the valve seats on 416s before I hit soft metal?

My teacher does not know how far, I am putting oversized valves in and have to cut a lot out. He says the top part of the seats go through a process where they are hardened and if you cut too much you will get to the softer untreated cast iron.

I have 416 heads and am moving up to 1.94 intake valves. I am in a engine repair class and have cut the intake valve seat to 130 thousandths already to try and get the 1.94s to fit. I can just now see the contact point on the valve, but I need the seat bigger to get the contact point in the correct place. We will do a 3 angle valve job to clean up the big margins when we get everything to fit ok.

go to a machine shop and buy a valve seat and you'll know exactily what you're dealing with.
