distributor question
I'm building a 350 for my 84 Trans Am, to be emissions legal and retain all of the computer controls. I'm thinking the stock 180,xxx+ mile distributor isn't a good idea on a fresh engine. can I get away with replacing the distributor gear, cap, rotor, coil and module etc on the stock one? Or are there any other aftermarket options that will work? Thanks for any help.

Actually, the HEI is about as dependable as an anvil, they just don't break. When it's out check the shaft to see if there is any side to side motion which would indicate the bushings are worn out. If they are, then it' s probably time to step up for a new diz. (up and down is usually no big deal, but if you feel like it you can purchase bushings to take out that play) If not, then pop the rotor off and check to see that the wiring isn't frayed or damaged. If that's OK, then there are a couple of aftermarket upgrades available, but you're limited due to the emissions laws so be careful.
