Swap TPI intake for an LT1 intake

I have heard of people doing it and I have questions for them.

1. Do the ports line up? I understand I'll be drilling new mount holes.

2. Can I re-use my throttle body?

3. Will a small (1987+) diameter distributer clear? I understand I'll need to make the hole first.

4. Will running seperate coolant lines from each head (like circle track cars)to the radiator be sufficant?

Won't work. Biggest problem is the LT1 does not have a place for a distributor. The LT1 uses Opti-Spark.

That is in spite of the fact that the LT1 intake requires LT1 heads which won't work on our cars either due to "reverse flow" and designed around the Gen II block.

LT1 intakes have been made to fit Gen 1 engines but the cost isn't worth it unless you have a machinest for a friend that will basicly do it all for you. The ports will like up but all the intake bolts are different as a preventative measure. You would need to make a hole for the distributor. You would need to make a water crossover passage in front under the TB where there isn't much, if any, room. John Moss put an LT1 intake on a green RWD late model Monte Carlo. They used a 400 small block chevy and use f-body floorpans to convert it to RWD. It was very cool. If you check out my EFI page, you will see a cheap intake from Holley. I also have an article on putting GenII LT1 heads on a GenI block. You can see the different intake bolt patterns and such. The L98 TB should fit a LT1 intake.

I am a machinest on the side but not my primary job anymore, not enough money in it.
I was planning on filling(welding) the intake holes and re-drilling the intake to the TPI pattern so I won't have to touch my heads.
I too am concerned over the distributer, will a small base distributer clear if I provide the hole? that's simple to make that hole.
I guess I need to look for a used intake and look to see.

This is why I'm asking. It has been done before and I want more information.

I am just wondering what the benifits f the swap are. I don't really think that doing all that work to put the LT1 intake on would give you that much difference in power. The time and money are both better spent elsewhere. You could always just buy an LT1 engine and drop it in.

Benifits? How about higher rpm with more HP? Especially with a larger cube engine like a stroker motor. The alternate is the miniram and it's $1200-1500 depending on options needed. That's the motivation, cash.
