I have a really loud clacking noise coming from my engine that changes w/ engine RPM, I thought it was the lash on the rockers b/c they were a little loose and it's much louder w/ valve covers off. I tightened them up and it got louder? wtf? What else might be making this racket?

I'm having the same sound, mine is coming from the drivers side and is louder under the car.

I am having a loud noise also 88GTA with stock 5.7 liter. It sounds like something is inside of the tpi unit bouncing around. It does it for a little while and stops then starts up again. I checked the pushrods and valves and everything seems fine. What the heck is it? If you place your hand on top of the TPI unit, you can definatly feel something clanking.

I heard somewhere that if you have a 700-R4,that is the oil pressure reg. in your auto tranny.

Regulator in the tranny?

If it was a tranny problem, wouldn't the noise come from the tranny, not the engine?

The 700-R4 is often the source of clacking. Something to do with the pressure and the torque converter. Mine stopped when I put in a new converter.

Well if it is coming from the engine, it could be a collapsed lifter.
On the subject of the converter, since I got a tranny rebuild and used NON lockup converter I have had a clacking noise to near the converter or the exhaust not really sure though.

Can't you use an automotive stethascope(sp?) on the valve covers to check for a bad lifter or such?
