first time engine start up ?
first time engine start up ?
I'm about ready to start up my 383 for the first time but I need to have an exhaust system bent up for it. I'm know that I will need to run it at 2,000rpm to break the cam in and I don't think the neighbors would like it too much if I ran it at 2 grand for 20 minutes in the driveway but I would just like to start it for a minute or two to make sure it runs before I haul it to the exhaust shop so my question is will I do any harm to the engine or cam by just running it for a short time at first?
Just wanted to remind you that if you have a factory roller cam in your new engine, you won't need to run it at two grand for twenty minutes. The roller cams don't require a break in. However, if you are breaking in a flat tappet cam, as long as you have at least the exhaust manifolds or headers bolted up, it shouldn't hurt anything to run it for that long. You can risk burning an exhaust valve if you don't have at least those bolted up. As far as the neighbors go, they might get ticked off about the noise, but they'll get over it eventually!

why not get the mufflers done first? you will need to break in the engine reguardless of what type cam it has.
