Funny Gas Tank Poblem

I have a 91 RS TBI, and my car has this funny problem with the gas tank. Whenever I brake hard, I find that my tank will drop about 1/2 (on the gauge), and if im at a 1/2, it will actually run out of gas. Is this a normal problem? Does anyone else have this problem? Also, is there any way around it or to fix it? (its kinda annoying) Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your time.

I would verify it is really at half a tank by checking your mileage. The tank is about 16.5 gallons, so check your mileage to see what it is, then fill up and see how far you've gone when you run out to see if it is really at 1/2 a tank or if your sender is screwed up.

If it is at about a 1/2 tank, then it could be the rubber hose in the tank that couples the fuel pump outlet to the sending unit is split, or some other problem that would require dropping the tank.

i know that my gauge is correct because when i fill up from a 1/4 tank to full it is 12 gallons, so the sender is ok.

What should i look for when i drop my tank? (i plan on doin the 4th gen gas tank swap, so would this be the time to do it?)

thanks again

The way the tank is shaped and the location of the sender it is normal for the gas gauge to move some when stopping and going around corners.

Its not normal for it to run out of gas though. Its sounds like a baffle in the tank that keeps gas around the fuel pump has broke loose inside the gas tank.

The only way to find out is to drop the tank and look inside.

I'd get fuel starvation and the motor would die if I have less then 1/2 tank and brake really hard. This only happened on late weekend nights at industrial parks braking from 90 to 0.

The top side of the gas tank is horizontal to the road surface, the side facing the front slopes down from front to rear, this minimizes stop/start sloshing. There's a piece of sheetmetal that splits the tank from front to back a few inches from the driver's side of the sending unit/pump opening. It anchor's the filler neck close to the bottom of tank, and acts a side to side baffle.
