New oil pump. Is high volume better?

I have 305 TBI I'm looking for a new oil pump and im curious whether a high volume pump is better or if it would be bad to put in a stock 305 TBI engine.
-thanks

A high volume pump takes more power to turn. With a stock engine I would go with stock replacement pump.

Do I Understand correctly... having the stock pump moves the same amount of oil regardless, but the #26 springs bypasses at a higher pressure, giving more pressure at higher rpms?

What kind of pressure would the stock M55 give at say 5k-6k rpms? What kind of pressure with the #26 spring at the same rpms? What about around idle?

not to mention a high volume pump will suck a stock pan dry.

The "ultimate" combo that I've seen floating around here (and I've done it ) is the Melling M-55 oil pump, the High Volume M-55A Oil Pump Pickup, and the Mr. Gasket #26 spring.

This way you have the ability to suck up more oil than you might need, but just incase... and you're squirting the oil at a high pressure, yet still volume, which is a good thing in your case

I don't meen to hijack this thread but I made the mistake of using a high volume pump and it indeed runs the pan dry if the motor is held wfo for too long ('bout crapped myself the first time I saw it). Are there any 6 or 7 quart pans that work well for our cars?

I posted that a couple replies up.

I think it's Moroso that makes a nice pan for the thirdgens in a 7 qt. version. I've got a local guy around here that does them too.
