What is this thing? (oval hole in pass side floorpan)
After just paying almost $200 to have a giant section of my driver's side floor replaced, I peeled off some sticky insulation that covered a weird oval hole on the pass side. It appears like it's supposed to be there, but there is some rust (rot) on one edge, and a shiny but thin piece that covers the hole but certainly doesn't make anything watertight. I should post a pic, but does anyone know offhand about this hole? What options do I have to eliminate the rust in this area?
I had a similar situation. Mine was on the drivers side though. I took my carpet out for other reasons, and I noticed an oval shaped hole in the tranmission tunnel in between the rear seats. I figure that it was the torque arm rubbing on the tunnel and finally tore the floorpan, or someone cut it to make clearance.
I have a pic, but its not on the net..

You reckon thats a drain hole that is just missing its cover? I know in certain places there are drain holes. You know, so in case you try to turn your car into a submarine or something.
Just a thought.

Yes, those are floor pan drain plugs. Why they are there I don't know. They are impossible to get out and tough to put back in. More of a holdover from older car's I think.

If you get a chance to walk through an assembly plant, watch what happens with all those holes. Some are used for gauging the positioning of the pan when the subframes are spot welded in place. Some are used as access holes (to stick a hand or tool through to start a bolt, etc.) And some are used as handling or grappling points. The Fischer Body design boys get to figure out how the car gets assembled, then select the best (most useful) place to punch these holes for multiple purposes. When it's all done, a cover get glued/sealed in place and we get to wonder about them for eternity.
Just in case you wanted to know.

Darn 9" moved the torque arm out too far, and rubbed its way into the cabin..
