mini starter and B&M flexplate...
So my Tommy Johnson mini starter still does not clear my B&M flexplate even with the shims in the starter. Anyone else have this problem? Or know if I can add additional shims? I will post picks when I get home.
Thanks

First question:
Do you have the correct 153 tooth flexplate?
Does the starter have 2 sets of mounting holes?
Can you pry the bendix out with a screw driver at all?
The best way to check correct depth of the gears is to insert a paper clip between the teeth on the flexplate and starter bendix. The correct position is 1 tooth of the flex between 2 starter gears.
The pic will definately help to understand the problem though.

HiTech.
I have play with it using all different shims and such. have it set up where a paper clip fits and I have pulled the benbix out with a screw driver to watch it mesh with the flexplate. My problems when the starter engauges the return spring or magnet doesn't pull bendix back away from the flywheel so it stays kindof engauged on the flexplate. I am about ready to go to a stock starter and see it that works

That's not his problem... and the shims that go between the starter and the block, have nothing to do with it, and won't fix it.
He's got a Hitachi starter; where you put round shims kind of like rear end carrier shims, to space the whole motor off of the aluminum mounting block.
Nippondenso starters don't have that hassle. They retract farther in the first place.
I'd suggest one of those instead of the Hitachi one.

A picture is worth a thousand words. You need to place a shim between the starter motor and the aluminum mounting plate. That will pull the bendix back away from the flexplate. A small washer between each will do the trick unless your starter came with additional shims. This is not uncommon.
I had trouble getting a correct engagement between my CSI mini starter and my 400 block. I actually had to mill off 1/16" of material off to bring the starter closer to the block. All is good now!

Ok I will try the other shims too. I think me having that B&M flex plate kinda messed things up a little since its thicker than stock.

Does anyone know where I can get additional shims fo this starter? (I need the shims that push the starter away from the flexplate, not the block to starter shims).

Gearhead0384 - Try CSR. Even though you may not have their starter, the shim will fit your application. I have used their starte with different mounting plates without any fit problems.
