will faulty plug wires cause engine backfire?

I swapped in some MSD 8.5 superconducters, but I also swapped in an old cap and coil off my 85. the cap and coil worked fine in the 85, but after the swap, the 82 will idle fine, but if I try going it the car will only run on 6-7 cylinders and pops out the exhaust real bad. the tach jumps around like crazy. I bring the engine up to 2000 rpm maybe and the tach reads from 3500 to 4000..
I just bought these msd used and i'm wondering if i should be yelling at someone cause they ripped me off.

but the funky tach makes me think coil...

Bad wires will cause a backfire, Check to make sure they're not laying on the headers, this happened to me. I drove around for a month with a backfire until the car warmed up. I checked the #1 plug and it was completely burnt through.

hey man, check your wires to make sure that they are in the right place on the cap. My friend and I did a carb/distributer swap and he mixed up 2 wores, and brought about the same condition as you're talking about.

yea that was my first thought, crossed wires.
it runs like it gots crossed wires too.
I checked all the wires with a timing light and they all flash nicely and consistantly
weird!
I'm gonna swap cap and coil anyway since i got the msd 6al and blaster2 with the wires. hopefully it will all work out *prays*
