emissions help

I am having problems passing emissions and have until the May 20th to pass or lmy icense gets suspended. My hydrocarbons have been 3 times the limit and after replacing most everything back to stock (stock timing, chip and new O2 sensor) I still failed.

I still have headers and high flow cat (may need to be replaced) and 1.6 roller rockers. Does anybody know if the 1.6 rockers are causing me to fail. I hoping not but if I have to put he stockers back on to pass I will. Any advise or tricks to pass will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Dave

Is the car carbed or injected? HC fail is usually the sign of a rich condition? Do you have to pass emissions at idle or with the car on a dyno?

His sig shows TPI.

High HC is from unburned or partially burned fuel. While it could be a rich condition, more likely it's a "miss" condition. Spark plugs, wires, cap are all in play there. A leaking injector could do it. Valves must be sealing properly (verified with a compression test). After you verify all that, then the cat may be considered.

This November is the last time I need to have a current emissions test when I renew my registration. After that, the car will be eligible for "collector" plates, which don't require an emissions test. Ask me if I'm looking forward to that time...

I'm definatley in agreement with it running rich and unfortunatley I have to pass the test on the dyno.

Thanks for the insight 5 7. I may go and check a couple plugs (wires are new) and look into a compression test, though I'd be suprised if there's any problems in this area as the car runs very good.

something else to look at is the chip, it could very well have additional timing programed into it.
2 degrees of timing can may a big difference in the HC. if you have the stock chip, it may bring it right into line.

posting up all the numbers, HC, CO, CO2, O2, & NOx for both what the car is doing & what the maximum passing numbers are can also help to figure out what may be the problem.

you said you only one more strike left, what state are you in?

He said he put the stock chip back in and still failed.

Yes, posting the #'s and knowing what state this is would be helpful.

Hey guys, I ran across this post and thought I would see if you were able to help me out as well. I'm in Ohio and need to pass emissions checks here as well. I have failed twice already.

First Try, showing a code 32, failed on all 3 gasses
Gas Reading Limit
HC 120.6 PPM 117.0 PPM
CO 0.85% 0.65%
NO 1418.2 PPM 821.0 PPM

Found a vacuum line that goes to the EGR Solenoid that needs to be connected to a vacuum source. It wasnt, so I hooked it up where it goes, and got checked again.

Second try, No codes set, failed on only COs.
Gas Reading Limit
HC 110.5 PPM 117.0 PPM
CO 0.79% 0.65%
NO 539.9 PPM 821.0 PPM

Bad O2 sensor? Any other ideas? Thanks

Brian

last results

My last results are as follows

Timing was set @ 0 for this because a mechanic said it would lower my hc's (car was also hot). What actually happened was hc's went up from 2.23 and co's went down from 13.9.

Gas Reading Limit
HC 4.10 gpm 0.8 gpm
CO 9.1 gpm 15.0 gpm
CO2 456.4 gpm n/a

i had to re-read his post, twice before i saw that ,

Slepewesel, a weak O2 could be your problem.
also, do you have the right temp thermostat in it?
if the motor isn't getting fully warmed up, it can cause the ECM to richen up the mixture.
some other things that can cause high CO are the coolant & air temp sensors, the air injection system leaking air into the manifolds, an exhaust leak in front of or near the O2 sensor, problems with the canister purge system.
the cat could be weak or not be hot enough.

someone else posted this up in another thread, it was done using euro cars, but the basics still apply.

91305z, i don't know much about Grams Per Mile, where im at we use Parts Per Million. but from the looks of it i think it may be miss fire related.
i don't think the 1.6 rockers are hurting you, if the plugs all look good, check for vacuum leaks.
