"grrrrrr" sound coming from rear?

Okay, I have a couple questions. One is in regards to this noise I've been hearing lately. Its a loud "grrrrrrr" sound coming from the rear. I don't know what it is and I can't really describe it any better than that. Is something wrong with my rear end? What should I do about it?
Also, once in a while my brakes squeak really bad and are really sensitive. It usually happens after it rains or after I wash the car. Yesterday (a rainy day) I went to Wendy's to eat, came out maybe 20 mins later and as I was goin through the parking lot, I tapped the brake to slow down for a turn. Well it felt like the brakes locked and the car actually skid. I only hit them VERY lightly. Do I need new brakes?
And finally, when I put the car from park into drive or reverse, the car makes a soft "knocking" noise, hesitates, then jerks a little and goes. Is something wrong with my tranny? Sorry for the long post, but I wanna get these things squared away because I am considering selling the car. Thanks for any help.

A "grrrr" that increases with speed is usually an axle bearing.

A "grrrr" that will get worse while on the gas and a little quieter when off the gas in usually a pinion bearing.

You didn't mention if the brakes were drums in the rear, assuming from the description, they are.

Drums will get touchy in cold weather/wet weather or first couple times in the morning if the drums are out of round. If the shoes are in good shape, you can usually get away with just turning the drums.

As far as your "knock", check the trans mount first.

Thank you for your help. How would I change the bearings? Is it a DIY job or should I get a shop to do it? And yes, my brakes are drums. All I have to do is turn them? Thanks again, I appreciate it.

Mettalli, I got the same 3 problems you have. We should meet and compare cars. In fact if the problems are the same we can go to the same mechanic and probably get a two-for-one discount deal. Email me!!!

As far as the brakes, inspect them and make sure they are good and the wheel cylinders are not leaking.

Since you have a bearing noise and a brake grabbing problem, I would take a guess that the axle seal is leaking on the brake shoes, causing the problem. There is a good chance that the axle is wasted also.

If thats the case, you will need to replace the linings, seals, bearings and an axle or 2.

Axle bearings aren't bad, but you need some special tools to do the job. You need to use a slide hammer and a bearing puller to get the old ones out. The new ones just pound back in.

If its a pinion bearing, you should take it to a rear end shop.

Not a bad idea, I'd like to see your car in person. I don't know when I'd be able to meet ya though, I'm working most of the time and if I'm not working, I usually have plans with my girlfriend. Maybe I'll go to this Blue Top I hear about, but I don't know.

Yeah come to Blue Top on Friday at about 9 p.m. There are actually 2 cruise spots within a mile of each other so Friday nites are really pretty wild over there. I believe you can meet Denny this Friday also. He's got lot's of cars and parts. Email me for more details and directions. Your problem sounds real simular to mine. BTW what's happening with your pic in the sig.? We want to see your car. I know it's sweet. Maybe I can help with that too.
