Help with cam selection
Motor Specs:
Completely Stock except Intake manifold
I was looking at putting a cam in my 305 I have chose the one I want I think. Here is the specs duration 213/219 @ .050, lift .454/.468 with 1.5 Rockers and 110 lobe separation. I was wondering if this cam has enough over lap to give it some sound? Also when you upgrade a cam do you recommend replacing the lifters and timing chain?
EDIT: Also I wanted to ask what the stock piston dish is. I have read around 12.44cc dish for a lg4 is this correct?

You'll probably get some lope with a 305, but regardless, unless you're builing a very high RPM engine, lope is a waste of power.

I know that cam is fairly small so I shouldn’t have problem with low RPM. I was just hoping for it to have some sound to it cause I always the cam sound. Anyone know about my piston question is the stock dish 12.44cc? I am trying to figure out what compression I will be running with 64cc heads. I figure 8.4:1 with 64cc heads a 15cc compressed gasket and stock deck height of .025.

what year engine is that?do you have pics?
i have seen dishes as big as 32cc.on stock cast pistons!with stock 305 heads @ 58cc you will get into the high 8:1 range.
the best bet is to trace the head casting #s. mortec.com is the best place to start.the head casting #s are under the valve covers and will be the only 7 digit numbers there.
post those and we can help you more.

Yes the LG4 dish is about 10-12cc's.
Your compression is going to be too low for that cam. Why are you putting 64cc heads on there? Your going to have a compression ratio in the 7's

Well -12.44cc piston with a 4.100 bore .015 compressed gaskets and a stock deck height of .025 comes to 8.4CR with a 64cc head. The reason I went with 64 cc heads was because I wanted to use Vortec heads and I want to just upgrade what I have now and then later on replace the short block with a Wheeler 383 short block. Engine analyzer shows my little 305 with this setup will produce 306hp at 6000rpm and 295tq at 5000.

K I looked at a few more cams and I guess a smaller cam would be better the power range of that cam is to high. I am now looking at Comp Cams High Energy 250/250 specs are 206intake / 206exhaust @.050 and .425 lift with 1.5 rocker arms. Moves the power band down 500rpm power pretty much stayed the same. But low end increased its over 200ft lbs at 1500rpm. Then when it comes time for the 383 I can upgrade to a XE274 and should push out over 400hp.

XE256 looks to work well too but the XE250 produced more torque down low. I will probably go with one of these grinds I guess it will just be buy it and try it cause these programs are always on the optimistic side I am just hoping for a good fun daily driver till I can get funds for a 383 short block.
