Redline on a 327ci motor...
Allright...I am aiming at building a motor capable of revving high to an 8.5k redline or similar, and do it safely. I realize if i take a 350 block i can destroke it by using a 305 crank and with a .030 overbore i should yeild 327ci. I *Should* be able to free up some revs with this destroke.
Please do not worry about WHY i want to destroke a motor, i know there is no replacement for displacement...lets just leave it at chevy vs ford, 331ci SBF vs a 327ci sbc both outfited with the same twin turbo system and there is a Liter Restriction. What do you think is possible out of a 327 as far as revs.
Should I try to locate a 400ci small block and put a 289 crank in it for 327ci # and the better revs, or will a 350block/305crank suffice???

You sure don't know much about engines do you Jay. Engine size has NOTHING to do with being able to rev.
What ever happened to the 400 you bought on E-Bay Jay???

Rebuilding a 400 Dropping into 92
I just bought a complete 400 sbc off of ebay. im picking it up in two weeks and will then begin the slow teardown and rebuild. Im looking for some tips, or ideas as to how i will be able to get 475-550 hp out of this motor. It is a 2 bolt block, casting 509, Stock 400 heads, and what i believe to be a stock 400 intake.
Some ideas i have been tossing around are that of using a tunnel ram intake with two 750hp holley carbs, with a stock crank and stock rods, but with forged pistons. I know ill run into hood clearance issues, ive always fancied an aero scoop anyways.
But im looking for budget oriented tips and suggestions as to what i could do to this motor to make that kind of power and be able to be driven daily, taken to the strip and beat on, and then driven to the movies afterwards to appease my lady while keeping some sort of decent mileage.
Another question, The motor in my car now is a seized tbi 305. Would i be able to use the tbi setup on my 305 on the 400, obviously to make the power id need to switch out he injectors and reprogram the ecm, but would it be possible? Or would it be a waste of time?
Thanks in advance fellas. Oh, and Steve, I probably will get the block studded, ive read that reccomendation youve given in a few other 400 sbc posts, but does studding the block really help...
Ill supply pics of the buildup and what not as it goes on, but im looking for suggestions now...

To make a 327 out of a 350, put a 327 crank in it. The blocks are the same.

And the 400 project never reached the the buildup stage, the block was junk.

an engines ability to move air in and back out has a lot more to do with it's ROM range than the mass of it's parts or how many cubic inches it displaces. max out the breating and then look at light weight parts.
jay it'll serve you well to read more and talk, or type, less.

Well Yaaa...
I think I'll use the 283 crank in my Windsor motor, and slap on the Mopar 813 heads.
Should be an all fire concoction.
But hey, don't ask me why...I'm Liter-limited.

I wouldn't use any of those cheap-azz fordchevydodge parts in my tractor...my Perkins deserves my better...
Least till I figger out how to stuff the 427 crank into it
Hmm..188 ci to ....
Ah well, if too much compression I'll start drilling holes in the pistons to relieve it...

lol, if you're talking to me, no, never stuck this one (Massey 65), dug the D4 out a few times and a very old Case 500 many a times...way to much power for the chassis setup.
Now all I do is scrape, till, mow and lift with the 65
Much less work on my old bones.
