Knocking at Low Rpms
Knocking at Low Rpms
I don't really know anything about this timing stuff,
but everytime I accelerate i hear this nasty knock. Im thinkin it has something to do with the timing. My dad told me I should retard the timing. I have no clue whatsover on changing timing. I have searched the forum but i cant find anything on timing. If anyone know my problem please tell me.

what kind of gas are you using? Just using better gas could fix the problem. Also the timing is supposed to be at 0*. Mine is at 4*advanced and i get a few knocks. Just try better gas bro.

Also, what weight oil are you using in the motor?
I've written atleast 3 explanations on how to check and adjust timing in this forum alone, I'm sure you'll be able to find atleast one of them

Then i would look at the timming then. Remeber that your timming needes to be at 0*. Or you can to trail and error and see where your engine likes it at. Mine likes it at 4* advanced. After you adjust it, go for a drive to see if its still there. keep doing this till your happy with it. Good Luck

Free or not doesn't change the fact that it's still not a weight of oil that is designed for your engine. And it's hardly the "same thing."
Get 10w30.

i agree def change the oil motorcyle/car oil is not interchangeable well atleast not with great effect, and i would only use oil thats suited for your application i use 10w-40 myself.. its really a preference, as long as its within the limits of the manufacturers suggested weights, good lucK!

Im not sure if thats a good thing or what
Just do an oil change and go from there. Remember 10W-40 Your choice of oil brand. I always go for Qacker State or Mobile 1 if my car is being good.

20W-50 works great in 305s or even 350s for that matter. It is the GM recommended oil in the 1983 owners manual for the climate I live in. I have this certain little feeling that the bottem end in my engine is identical to yours (except the 1 piece rear seal crank). The 1992 350 that I had was designed to use 20W-50 in this temperature too.
i have a feeling that If I change my oil to 10W40, it still won't fix the problem. My guess that over time, the timing chain has become stretched and changed the timing a little bit.

right, it may not fix the problem but he needs to put the right oil in there. You got to start somewhere.
