Bore Measuring
i put a piston ring in my cylinder on the unworn ridge, the ring gap is 0.021" and under the ridge the ring gap is 0.023" is there some formula to figure out if i have to bore it or could i just hone the cylinder?

The circumference of a circle is pi times the diameter. Pi is about 3.14159265359. So if your ring gap is .002" different between those 2 points, then the circumfernce of the bore is about .002" greater; which means the bore is somewhat less than .001" bigger. IMO you should be able to hone it (to restore the original style of cross-hatch pattern, which is very important) and run it without boring it.

thanx RB!!, also i was checking the rod bearings on the #5 cyl, the tabs that go in the grooves are flat on just one rod? something i should look for? the crank doesnt look scored or anything.
i like to check the bore for taper and out of round (with dial bore gauge or telescope gauges), which i doubt if your ring end gab method would allow.
