tapping noise from valve covers???

Hey ,my 84 LG4 has been making a very odd (to me anyway) sound for the past week or so. To me it sounds just like when the bearings on my alternator went, and in part the noise was (i loosened the belt and the sound lightened), but the rest of the noise is coming from cylinder 7. the sound is either inside the cylinder or inside the valve covers i'm assuming/hoping valve covers. theres no noticeable loss in power if that indicates anything. anyway my question is what exactly could this sound be? rocker, pushrod??? also what can i do to remedy it? thanks, derek

It could be that theres so much play in the rocker to valve clearance that it's chattering. I'd take the cover off and check for clearances.

Yeah, I agree, its probably from too little lash on your rocker arms. Just pull off the valve covers. I'll send you a file on the best way to do that.

Usaully if it is a lifter tick it would be loud all the time and the sound wouldn"t change that much on a load it just gets faster.A exhaust leak can almost sound the same as a lifter tick or loose rocker tapping sound, but can go from being quite, and hardly noticeable to getting very loud at higher rpms.

Have you checked your oil level lately? Are you using unacceptably low viscosity oil, like 5W-30 or 0W30? Has the oil been changed within the last 3,000 miles?

Just asking...
