rebuild help
so my L48 350 vette engine is now out and i have got a mechanic lined up to do a full rebuild on my engine. My aim is to get about 330 bhp and about 350 lbs/ft of torque. the plan is the following
- replace cam with something with a duration around 280 ( comp cam ?) would this be to lumpy on idle for town driving ?
- replace smog heads with world products sportsman 2 cast iron heads ( com. chamber vol 64cc ) would like something better but i'm on a budget
- relace intake with a edelbrock rpm along with matching 600 cfm carb
- hedman headers with 1 5/8 primaries leading to 3" catback system- cat removed .
- check and rebuild short block
which leads me to my question. I always though that stroking out my engine to a 383 would be way out of my financial budget but i just looked at this kit on summit. is this all you need to build a 383 stroker ?
http://store.summitracing.com/partde...0&autoview=sku
and is it a good package ? if you guys think i'm going about it in the wrong direction or could give any suggestions then that would be a great help. many thanks. craig

It shows the damper and flexplate in the picture, but doesn't list them as included. If they are, then it looks like all you need is gaskets, cam bearings, oil pump, etc.
Do you really want .060" over pistons/rings?

this is where my inexperience shows five7kid as my knowledge on engine's is basic. you talk about .060" pistons/rings what effects does that have on the cars driveability and performance ?
as you may be aware i am based in the u.k so emissions is not a problem and what i'm after is a drivable car that produces good bottom end torque. my main problem is my lack of experience in modifying engines so i'm after a package that suits my situation but wont cost a fortune. The car is only used on weekends so fuel economy is not a problem nor is lumpy idle as long as it can will tick over. I looked into the edelbrock rpm package but to be honest it was to expensive so i'm back to the drawing board.
my budget is around £1000 - £ 1200 for parts which equates to about $2000. is it possible to get the figures im after with the amount of money available and what would you suggest is the best road to go down ?
thanks again . craig

The oversize is dictated by what the block requires to clean up the bores. You want to overbore as little as possible to maintain cylinder wall thickness and future rebuild potential. Replace "060" at the end of the Summit part number with "030", and you'll get a 0.030 inch overbore kit.
If your parts budget needs to include the heads, I think you're going to be a little short. $910 for the stroker kit, plus shipping, plus the things not included, you're probably looking at at least $1500 without the heads.

yeah i think your right. are the figures stated attainable without stroking the engine out ? in your opinion five7kid what heads would you say are the best out there for the money as i would rather save that extra bit more and buy the right ones first time.

You won't need the extra stroke to get the power levels you're talking about.
I thought the Sportsman IIs were a good choice.

Standard GM Vortec heads. Poor valve springs, lift at valve limited to .460-.480 (varies from head to head). Requires Vortec-style intake manifold (click on "Suggested Parts") and self-aligning rocker arms.
But, with proper cam selection, they'll easily make your power goals.
NAL-VORTECZZ5 have the better valve springs and are machined for screw-in studs. You can use a better cam, like the 280 you mentioned, with them without worry.
