Steering column problem

ALright, a while back my bright and dim switch kinda broke. I thought no big deal, but now there is more to the problem. Tonight I hit my right signal, and a peice fell out and hit my leg. It looks like a bolt without a head. It has grease on it. First of all, what is this??? The column has a lot of play at the point where it goes through the dash. I can push down on the steering wheel and it bends about 4 or 5 inches. What am I gonna have to do....New column or can I get new parts?? If so, from where?? Need to figure this out....

Im not sure, but check to see if your highbeams still come on. I have a 91Firebird, and I lost some type of linkage in the column that caused my his not to switch on. I never saw the piece, but thats what it would look like. I have some play in my tilt too. Been there ever since we got the car new.

Sounds to me like your tilt support has come loose from the lower column. If you can move the steering wheel up and down at the point where it is supposed to tilt (without pulling the little lever......) Then you need to tear the column down, and tighten it up. This is about a 3 to 4 hour job, and requires a steering wheel puller, and a locking ring compressor. Other than that, just a selection of screwdrivers, and torx bits, and you should be good to go. It is not really difficult, just time consuming, and trying to figger out how the parts that fell out go back in can be fun too.

Good luck....

I also have the air bag in my car, the Haynes manual explains how to disarm it, but how do i take it off??? Just the bolts on the back and pull it out??
