Which engine to rebuild?
Which engine to rebuild?
Well it's about that time.... I sold my stroked 87 Iroc z and have acquired a new project, and 86 z. It has and lg4, and while it only has 77k original miles on it, it's a POS motor and I don't think I'll be able to drive it for too much longer like this.....
So here's the poop. My buddy was cleaning out his storage unit and he tossed me an lb9 longblock, it had about 70k on it when pulled, and the bores look good and there is hardly a ridge at all. he also gave me the heads with it (081's). which while they are in dire need of valve seals, I'm thinking of using them.
This same buddy was cleaning out his garage and wouldn't ya know he had a 350 2 bolt block in there, he said I could have that too....it was out of a 92 suburban I think he said. it's a 1piece RMS but I'm pretty sure it's not a roller block.
I don't know which on to do. The 305 doesn't need that much, mabye polish the crank and do a set of main and rod bearings, a timing set and possibly(an after market cam).
I'm guessing the 350 needs more extensive work, I believe he said the bottom end was making noise when he pulled it(rod bearing maybe.)
I might save the 350 for a rebuild in the future, and go with the 305 for now......
How woudl the the 350 do with the 081 heads on it?
Cam choices? I'm thinking the LT4 hotcam.
Would the 081 heads be able to handle the lift of the cam???
Any and all input ius welcome....
Thanks....
Chris....

there's a reason he gave you the 305s, no one wants them. also a reason he gave you the 350, but not sure what it is. i tihnk it'd be foolish to put any time or money in a 305 when you have a 350 sitting there.

open up the 350, look at the bottom end take it apart. Have it rebored and buy new pistons, most of the 305 parts you can reuse on the 350. The crank for the 305 I have been told is lighter and has less counter weights, I dont know about the rods they may be thicker as well, but the 081's assuming the 350 has crap heads will work well. Just need a valve job.
HE tossed me all the stuff because he kind of turned his back on chevy so to speak. He has a monte with a built up 4.3. But other than that he's like joe subaru and he's all about dumping cash into that thing. Be it far from me to turn down a fool who is going to give me 2 motors.
I"m still weighing my options.
