Very odd startup problem
One small question for anyone who might have had the same problem with their car. It isnt frequently that this happens, and it only happens at gas stations (?). Ill go and shut the car off to get filled up, and then i will have to really let it crank for a while to get it to start again. Note- this doesnt happen all the time...sometimes it starts right up, and usually it will start with barely any cranking. Starter heat soak problem? I HAVE NO IDEA! HELP! ITS EMBARASSING! Pulling up in a hot red IROC and then having it not be able to start up easily again....

Doesn't sound like a starter heat soak problem, since the starter is cranking. I would guess it is part of your ignition system that is failing, when was the last time you replaced your ignition coil? That would be my first guess.

I would probably guess something like that, but the thing about it is that it doesnt happen frequently enough for me to suspect something major. It pretty much happens once in a blue moon, if it happens twice a month, its a lot.
What kind of exhaust are you running? If you have full-length headers then it's probably your starter. My truck will do the same thing after it's been running a while. I think it just spins slower. The headers will cause the solinoid to heat up real fast. Jeg's sells a heat shield for your starter, if that's the problem. Does it happen anywhere else? It might be something weird with the pressure in the tank??

Yup, the fuel pressure always will energize...actually, I always wondered what that sound was...does it sorta "de-energize" when the engine is turned off? Cause I hear it at both times, on start up and shut off.
Yes the pump runs before and after, I hear it more after then before. But the starting issue could be heat soak.

i dont know if this has anything to do with it but i will tell you my story. on my 88 s10 blazer with a 2.5TBI 5 speed(oh yeah its a beast)the problem that i was having problems with it starting. it would turn over, but no fuel no spark. for a while it happened rarely. then started becoming more frequent. i replaced the fuel pump, and that seemed to fix it, but it eventually did it again. then it started happening all the time, and after leaving me stranded, i had to figure out what it was. after brain storming with my boss for a while, i said something that finally clicked. if i just hit the key, it would try to start once and that was it, it wouldnt try anymore no longer how long i kept on the key. come to find out its in ignition module. normally when i module goes out, it just quits and the car wont run at all. well theres two circuts in the module, theres a run circut(that operates the vehicle) and theres a start circut. the start circut unlike the run circut can be interminate(its late i cant spell)i replaced the module and that took care of it. i never in 1000 years would have thought about that. this might have nothing to do with your problem, but maybe this will help someone out someday. lil jay
