Lost nut in engine
hey, i accedently droped a nut into the valley of my engine(with the push rods and rollers) and it seems to have fallen down one of the three holes near the firewall. it sounded like it fell down quite far so my question is, where is it? im guessing its in the oil pan, and it doesnt look like its in the distributor hole. i really dont want to pull my engine out because i dont have a hoist, or the money to rent one. is it at ALL possible to remove the oil pan without pulling the engine? if removeing the engine is my only choice, how much do engine hoist's cost to rent? or buy even?

You should be able to rent an engine hoist for about $25 U.S. for the day. You won't have to pull the engine all the way, maybe a foot to get clearance under the pan. Good thing you noticed before you fired up the motor. I dropped a screwdriver tip in my #1 cylinder and didn't know it until I fired up the car
I have heard that large objects like a nut will just sit in the bottom of the pan and not go anywhere, but I cannot confirm this.
Good luck and If you can't afford a hoist, find a large tree with a stout branch, we used to do that at our house in Baltimore.

Get a magnet on a flexible wand and see if you can't retrieve it from the top, down along the distributer, ect...
Another place to try is through the oil drain hole....
You might get lucky and it's a tool that won't go to waste.

well i believe i'd worry about it, but there is a good chance it fell straight thru and is laying in the bottom of the oil pan. there isn't really a lot of places it could get stuck. i'd try with a magnet like you've been told and if you don't find it i'd turn the engine over by hand to see if anything hits or binds up.
