O 2 sensor problem?

I have a 1990 Iroc with the 5.0 tpi, 51k miles that has a code that shows the 0 2 sensor has a problem. I know just enough about this kind of problem to be dangerous. From what I know about this it might be something else making it show there is the 0 2 sensor. One thing might be that the last time I put gas in it was last October. Could the gas be old enough to make the sensor tell me there's a problem? Could the sensor be bad with this mileage? I guess any 15 year old part can go bad. Any thoughts on what I should do to to find out?

Thanks

Posting which code would be a good start. Getting a repair manual would be another.

I went by an AutoZone when I noticed the check engine light and they checked for the code. 45. I have a Haynes '82-'92 manual and the footnote says to "seek professional advice before purchasing replacement parts". I've replaced too many parts on cars only to find out if I had asked, someone could have directed me to the real problem.

So, where do I start? When I had my old 1969 SS Camaro I could always find a problem pretty quick. These 3rd genrerations are a whole different ball game.

Thanks
