Non thirdgen, 88 chev full size truck driveshaft
My Dad has an 88 chevrolet silverado 1500 and he has a question about his driveshaft. It is an aluminum driveshaft with a fiberglass cover over it. What is the fiberglass part for? His is tearing and he doesn't know whether to tear it on off or to tape it up.

If you tape it up it could cause a vibration.
If the outer skin is coming off, I would go get a new one. Even though there is aluminum underneath the FG...as the pieces come off it will lose balance.
Call a local driveline shop, they can fix/replace just about any driveline.

Don't know, could be some sort of sound deadener, to keep high RPM "drone" out.
Could be a little strength support.
Anybody else got an idea??
All I know is that if you alter the weight of the driveline by removing or adding weight, it will vibrate.

I'll bet it's just another useless feature stuck on a perfectly good truck that has no function but to break later in life.
