Okay, I'm buying a rebuilt 355 bottom end that is supposedly good to 7200RPM. I'm throwing my aluminum LT1 heads and intake on it and plan to make power til 6000-6500RPM or so.

Compression ratio is going to be between 10.6 and 11 or so, and will be run with fuel injection (LT1 intake). SLP 1 3/4" shorties to a 3" high flow cat and SLP 2otl exhaust (will probably need to get changed I know). 1.6 roller rockers. High-volume oil pump with 6qt pan. 2pc RMS, non-roller setup.

The engine currently has a CompCams XE 284 grind. Its 240/246 @.050" with a 110LSA. This seems a bit big to me for fuel injection, but if someone says it won't be too terrible to get running, I'm all for trying it. I was thinking something along the lines of a 230/236 grind or somewhere around there would be a good cam to run, but I'd like some second opinions. Also, what cams would work with my stock '88 distributor gear, or am I going to need to get the gear changed?

Thanks, I see you got your LT1 heads on and installed too, how are they workin for ya? Mine worked great with my intake, though I had a LOT to tune for. Unfortunately I didn't get a chance to do much tuning as my first real run down the track I spun a rod bearing. Assuming it had something to do with revving the bottom end to 6300 once or twice. Was trying to keep it under 6000RPM, but oh well, things happen and force you to buy bigger/better stuff The eventual plan is to have Lloyd Elliott do a Stage I/II port job on them.

Anyways, back to topic, thanks for the advice on the cam, I'll take a look into them.

Get a Crower part# 00440, it's perfect for what you're doing. If you want a tad less lift go with part# 00439.

If I'm building an F1 motor maybe. Those cams have 280*+ at .050"! This is a street motor, not all out drag.

I think the XE274 cam would actually be a very good choice for this motor, but I'm thinking the XE284 might be okay with the 11:1 CR I'll probably be running. 240/246.

The XE274 would be a 230/236 cam with a bit less left, seems to be the XE flat tappet version of the CC306 cam, but less lift.

This is the perfect cam. If you didn't want opinions, why ask?

I want opinions, but 280* of duration at .050" sounds insane on a fuel injected motor that runs the streets. In Crowe's catalog, they say even the 00432 cam has a power band of 4000-8000RPM, and it has 20* less duration.

I'm looking to make streetable power until 6500RPM or so.

Does anyone think that the 240/246 cam will be okay to use with the 11:1 CR and the LT1 intake/heads? As it is now, heads flow 220/180 when I got them flowed, but I plan to get them worked on over the winter or next summer.

I'd go with a custom grind of 230/236 using the new XFI lobes with close to .580/.590 lift with a 110LSA. Grab a set of Crane dual springs 99893 and have them set up for about 170lbs on the seat which will give you close too .600 lift capabilities. Also grab a set of comp r lifter and a set of pro mag rockers to get the lift and you should be set.
