installed a new manifold, now it wont start

i just got done installing a new fuel pump, a new manifold and changed the oil, drained the coolant. i put everything back together and its looking good, then i go to start it last night and the battery died. i juiced the battery up last night, then i go to start it this morning and nothing. i remember to put gas in the carb since it all was drained when i removed it, and i put a little down the primaries. i go to start it and it almost starts, but gas emits from the primaries and smoke comes out of the carb. i go to start it again and i happens again, but the smoke gets less and less each time. did i flood it? did i pour gas down the wrong part? is this normal? any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks

As is always the cause of this, the distributor is not lined up correctly.

Yes. You will have to take it back out and line the oil pump drive shaft up correctly, and then line up the distributor shaft correctly (keeping in mind that it rotates about 30° as it drops in), and drop it back in correctly. Piece of cake, about 5 minutes work.

ive got the distributor out now but i dont know how to tell if the oil pump drive shaft is set correctly, and if the distributor shaft is set up correctly. last time i put the distributor in the manifold, then the oil pump drive shaft sat on something in the engine until i turned it then it fell into place, and i bolted everything back on. appearantly that was wrong, can anyone shed some light on this?

What part of Northern Ca. are you in?

Anyway, best to get #1 at TDC, install the distributor so that the rotor is just shy of the #1plug wire on the cap (when the distributor is seated). As RB says, make sure the distributor engages the oil pump drive. You may have to reach down with a long, narrow screwdriver to rotate the pump drive slot. You'll have to "estimate" where the distributor drive will be, once it spins down on the cam gear.

8mike9, i live in stockton, for some reason i have the feeling we've already met. thanks for the advice, i just spent all day and night with my dad trying to figure it out. first we got what we thought was the correct position, then i started to crank it over and over and it just wouldnt catch. the battery then died. we then tried it all over again, and after a while we thought we had it again, the rotor pointed at wire number one on the cap, the timing mark was at zero, and the piston was up at the of cylinder one. i cranked it over and over and the carb kept spitting who knows what out. i quit for the night tonight, i have no clue what to do. should i keep with it or tow it to a shop? thanks

Sounds like you may have set the distributor in at #1 TDC, but it should be on the COMPRESSION STROKE.
If not, you have symtoms like you're experiencing. While you turn the crank by hand, have someone stick the tip of thier finger in #1 sparkplug hole, and as soon as air starts to blow out while you turn, align your mark with "0" and set the rotor tip to align with the #1 terminal on your cap. It still sounds like a timing problem to me.
