what causes this and how do i clean it?
im getting ready to put my intake manifold back on but i cant seem to get it completely clean. im posting pics below that will show what im having trouble cleaning. also what would cause those areas to get like that? and how do i get it clean? ive tried a razor blade and greese lightning, but neither worked.

It looks like someone has used RTV to seal the coolant ports. Gasket remover and a little effort will get it off.

no its not pitted. no matter how much i scrape at it with a razor blade it dowsnt come off. i soaked it with the gasket remover all last night and today and it wont come off.

Get yourself a nice aggressive single cut flat file and run it over the machined surface until clean.

As long as you can get the surface flat so it will seal, I wouldn't worry about it too much.

well i got a suggestion from another board on how to get if off and it worked... but it only took off what wasnt pitting. if i use lots of RTV will it be fine?

using a plastic roloc, i think thats what its called, wheel on the end of a drill. it polished it up real quick and cleaned up what wasnt pitting.

Wire wheel on the end of a drill. Works like a damn, and you'll find many other uses for it too.

I know BMW has a product there techs use to remove silicone. If you go to there parts dept. they should be able to get you some.
