Possible timing problem HELP!

Just finished my cam swap and went to start the car up....it cranks but there is no attempt to start...in the morning were gonna check for spark.....but here is my question....after setting dot to dot I cranked the motor over till #1 lifters were bottomed out and not moving (per the manual)....this is TDC for #1 right (combustion)?...so when I went on with the dist I set it to fire on #1....I can smell fuel but the car doesn't even try to start....could 180 out be causing this problem...HELP!!!

180 out could cause your no start.

thanks man...180 out would cause spark in cylinders with zero compression right.....resulting in no attempt to run......just trying to understand the motor a little more.......

The simplest way to explain this is like so. If you went to a door and expected it to be open, but it wasn't, you couldn't go through to the next room. Same thing is happening with your distributor if it's 180 out. It fires the spark into the #1 chamber expecting to hit a mixture of air and fuel, only the air and fuel aren't there. Since the air and fuel weren't there, it can't advance to the next stage of combustion, using the air/fuel detonation to basically fire the piston away from the head and back down into the hole. Since #1 is off, so is every other cylinder firing. In short, the spark keeps looking for a mixture to ignite, but nobody's home when it gets there. I'm not trying to make you feel stupid. I just want to answer the question effectively.
