Distributor / Timing

Is is possible to have the distributor off a cylinder and it still run? My friend put it in and I didn't see it. It runs for about 10sec then dies. Its a new rebuilt 305 L69.

well I don't think so.. but I have a similar problem. Mine will light right off and then you can't keep it running. I just checked my dist and it is in correct. I am getting some backfiring in the carb bc the aircleaner is sure hot on top.

You should check and make sure you don't have any rockers too tight.

You can get a car to run with it off by one cylinder. It normally requires that the distributor be turned a long way one way or the other.
You should also check for anytype of vacuum leak.

Hmm.. That is what I have to do. Dead center it won't even start. I have to turn it 1/8 way just to get it to start. I'll go on and reseat the distributor just to make sure. I've looked at all the vac lines and they look ok. Is there a good way to use a vac gauge or something to know for sure?

well no not really...you could spray some b12 chemtool around the carb base and intake gaskets to see if it makes any difference. if there is a leak it will make the motor run different for a few secs..

JCB if you Just put the motor together and it's doing that on fire up, you could have the Valves adjusted way to tight, or the cam in off a few teeth.

Alan. does it studder when it's running or fire up then shut off abrubtly.

If the firing oder's screwed up to the point where it will not run. it probalby won't start either.
crank it around to TDC on number one, pull the cap off, and see if the rotor's pointing to # 1 cylinder, if all is well it should be.

if it is, check to see if your getting sufficient fuel.

It seems to run fine when its running then just shuts off. I'm starting to lean toward fuel. I had the carb rebuilt and I'm thinking there may be a problem there. One thing I've noticed is fuel dumps out of my vac lines when I unhook them. I checked the distributor and it is point at #1. I had the engine professionally built so hopefully they got it together right.

One other thing, if I pump the gas and keep it above 2000rpm I can keep it running for awhile. As soon as I let of the gas it dies.

yep, i checked rockers.. but i am going to check again.. and distributor.

My cam really can't be off even 1 tooth. The motor will not turn over if it is. No piston to valve clearance.

But,,.. lets get alans prob fixed in this thread... I have lived this long without mine.. a little longer won't kill me.

I think you do need to make sure you have the dist at tdc on #1.
the probs do sound similar.
