keep the two bolt and if you really want a four bolt then you can get splayed mains thats what we do on our sprint car motors

I say they '' hold up well '' because some people think just because its a 2 bolt and not a 4 bolt that the mains are going to come flying though the oil pan when you rev it . i am building a 468 bbc for my camaro its a 2 bolt . the motor thats in the car now ...383 is a two bolt and i turn mid 11s with it . never had a problem with it being only a 2 bolt main ....So they Hold up Well!

not true...i have an 89 vette engine also, 2 bolt main...this is common tho, i've seen huge arguments break out over this...but yea, not all of them came with 4 bolts, i think a very select few came with 4 bolts actually...the majority were 2 bolt mains...2 bolts are stronger than most people think...i've seen 500 hp outta a 2 bolt, and the motor has done fine...

Are you sure that it actually came from a vette? Did you check the suffix codes and partial vin on the block? I just want to see some actual evidence. It just think that its wierd that everybody and their mother has a vette motor.

me leigh

and to me leigh sorry to inform you you are wrong about the whole 4 bolt theory but i pulled it from the vette and it has factory aluminum heads with d shaped exhaust ports and guide plates and not to mention the corvette fiberglass valve covers.

yea, i've seen the vette it came out of....and I also looked up all the block listing/codes, head codes, and checked them all...i also have the aluminum L98 d shaped exhaust ports.....mine was a 305, and it blew up, and we had easy access to the vette motor, so we figured why not...i know what you mean tho, it does seem like tons of people have vette motors...i think alot of people just throw the name on there, or just throw the alum L98 heads on....but if you have a pre87 vette, that doesn't count, thats just like any other stock 350..

Guideline I've always heard was that 2 bolts were good up 500-600 peak HP.

I'm running a studded 2 bolt on my 383. No problems so far.

If you run the aforementioned "splayed" four bolt main caps, the modified block is said to be stronger than a factory four bolt block. The factory four bolts have been known to crack the block between the bolt holes for the main bolts if continually run. Drag racing style "shock load" runs one after the other seem to be the most common cause of death. Apparently long term stock car style runs don't hurt them as bad. Splayed mains are supposed to be better than all of them.

If your conserned about the 2bolt mains, and your making less than 600hp, and not spinning it over 7000RPMs, then just get some ARP Main Studs. Go with the ones for a windage tray, bolt up a windage tray to help with oil, and now you have a much better oiling system, and streight in the bottom end that will hold up better than a factory 4bolt main. I have heard that its recomended to get a linehone done on the mian caps when you install studs from the way they load the caps.

If your going all out, then splayed is the way. The idea of going to a splayed main is to keep the mains aligned better with the block, a 2bolt will keep the crank from "falling" out, but keeping proper bearing alignment is more important, and harder to do at higher HP and RPM lvls.
