Jump starting a dead battery

After a car is jumped when the battery won't start the car, what is actually running the car? Is it the alternator or the battery? This is also when the jumper cables have just been taken off, and the car is running under it's own power.
Just need to settle a debate with my friend.

It's the alternator.
But be carefull although Ive never had a problem, if you jump a car or have a dead battery the alternator could go into wide open charge and burn out. Like I said Ive never had this problem but it could occur.

PS, you could remove one of the battery terminals and the car will run proving that the alternator is keeping it juiced up.

Current plans: Rebuild 305 with flat tops instead of the dished "cups" for pistons or slightly built 327 with the 58cc heads from the LG4, Upgrade the 2:73 to 3:73 or 3:42 and replace the turbo 350 with 700r4.
