need to put an end to my fuel pump problem

88 firebird was bought for its good body for my project. Droped in 305 from 85 ta with extras in 88 and swaped from TPI to TBI. Fuel pump prior was running ok but had 130,000 mile on it. Bought new pump and replaced. worked but after a day of sitting went to start it and nothing. No prime sound. Checked to see if there was power in the rear and 12 volts was present. Figured it was the new pump that went bad. Went and bought new pump from parts store and worked my *** off for the sencond time. Turned the key and it primed. Went to start and it started. finished working on the project and let it sit for the next weekend. went to start it. Nothing. 12 volts still going to the back i must add. Tested the pump that was new but thought went bad and worked. Any body got a clue to my pump first works then goes dead? anybody experience this?

Is the starter actually engaging and cranking the motor over?

Better check all the wiring and connections to the pump. The "better" fuel pumps come with new pump, rubber isolater, and NEW WIRES for the in tank portion of the sending unit from the top cap down to the pump. Better check and make sure that you don't have a loose/burnt connection. You might take a resistance reading at the sending unit and see what it tells you about your pump........

Another thing to check is the fuel pump relay connection. Sometimes they need to be cleaned up a little.

I had the exact same problem. I would put in a new pump, it would run for about a day then after that, nothing. It turned out to be the relay like irocracer07 mentioned. I had to replace the relay and the part that it hooks in to.

I replaced the relay it was the first thing i did. The relay seems to be working ok, it sends prime voltage to the back to kick in the fuel pump but doesn't kick on whatsoever

Well, if the relay is doing it's job, but the fuel pump still isn't coming on, I'd say it's time to check the wiring to the fuel pump itself. I'm assuming you've already checked the fuses and found no problem, so the only logical thing left is the wiring must either be shorting out somewhere or it's just plain rotted.

From your description, seems the pump is not grounded.
