camaro wont idle when hot!!! help!!

ok i know this isnt a thirdgen and im sorry but im a member and we help each other out, so im hopin you can help me out........ so my father has a camaro with a built 327 from a 72 impalla ss, it has a halley 650 double pumper on it and we cant seem to get her to idle when hot worth a crap, the car has been sittin since 96 and i just got it up and runnin a few months ago, i have not rebuilt the carb so maybe that the colprit. but when cold it will start up and idle just fine but when it gets hot it starts to hunt and ends up diein, ill have to keep my foot in it to keep her runnin. could a stuck thermistat make the motor run like this? ive tryed a bunch of sea foam to clean it out a lil. It helped a bit when you rev it but other then that not much. what do you all think, also when hot and huntin for an idle i can hold it up in the rpms and it will want to miss and almost seems like its tryin to back fire....timming? what kind of vac should it be runnin?

ok i know this isnt a thirdgen

i just got the other post closed cus ede can be an asssssss hole. so im repostin like he said!!!!!

You're winning friends left right and center eh buddy? Edit your post so it's not full of spelling mistakes, and is semi coherent first of all. Ede told you to edit to remove the year, and you kept it, and you hoping NOT to get help here or what?
If the idle is hunting, and it diesels, check the timing, and vacuum, one or both is probably messed up, but a simple check will tell all.

timing could be say 10* at idle, it should run ok. You can play with that, but if it's 35* before, or 10* after, then you have problems.
If your vacuum is between 16*-24* you're ok (well, should run ok).

If you're outside those outer limits then that's your problem (which is my guess)..

Forget the tStat..gotta clean that puppy out first...Holley is the easiest to take apart use "cleaner in a can" and replace stuff as needed (anything with rubber/gasket on it"...after that, should run like it did 10 years ago...also gotta wonder if you have a choke stickinmg stuck...i/e fast idle drops, but chhoke is still closed...instant death if that's happening.

Start with a carb kit, look for the list number no the carb, then go from there.

Everybody here has made some really good points. I'll give you a more direct laundry list.

1. Drain the old gas out of the tank and replace with new 91 gas.
2. Take the Carb apart and replace gaskets and give it a good cleaning.
3. Make sure the choke and linkages are working properly.
4. Replace your fuel filter, oil and give the car a good tune-up.
5. Check all your vacuum hoses and replace them if they're bad.
6. Crank it up and set your timing.

Then see if it still gives you a problem. If it does, post again and make sure we know the grocery list of things you've already taken care of. It'll help out a lot when it comes to further troubleshooting.

Don't sweat it Sonix. You made some really good points just like everybody else. In all honesty, all I did was condense them into a list of things to do.

yeah last nite i checked some things and im only runnin 10-12 lbs of vac at idle and i checked timmin and i was like 12 adv. so i put it back to 5., i did all this with the motor cold befor the hunting started. yeah the next thing im goin to do is get the carb rebuilt, but the problem is right now its at storage and i need to drive it about 20 miles to get it to our friends shop so we can get to work on it, i have to take it on the freeway to get it there. i guess as long as i have the timmin set not to advanced and the motor is runnin should i be fine to run it to the shop?

there's absolutely no other car you could use?

As long as you arent running too lean then you should be ok for 40 miles all highway atleast... 40 miles stop and go traffic I would not suggest.... and that's only if you cant find a friend who would drive you, etc.

Why not head down to the car, pull the carb and have it rebuilt, then head back with a new carb base gasket and a timing light?

BTW, trailors are for vehicles that don't run well enough (if at all) to make the trip.

My bad, I assumed you had another carb you were going to put on there.... but you could do as suggested from the post directly above this

ok i kinda miss lead you its a manual choke.....also i drive it up the street and back today and it hesatates bad and wants to pop and like backfires a bit when you give it gas but when you get into higher rpms it seems to get a lil better. also it seems like it has a miss or its not runnin on all 8. i know i cant drive it much at all the way it is now....any thoughts? ps yeah im lookin into the rebuild kit now.....what kit should i get for a holley 650 double pumper? if i can get it fixed in the next week or so then yeah ill just pull the carb and then go from there but if i can get her runn i lil better now i would like to just drive it out there insted of drivin back and forth to the storage and work on it a hour here and an hour there. just tryin to make it more easy on myself.

The Holley trick-kit is pretty nice. Just call the autparts store and get what you need and then go out and Git-R-Done. It shouldn't take that long to get the carb rebuilt and tune it up. Just don't forget to get rid of that gas and replace it with new premium for at least the first tank. Run a fuel system cleaner too.
