looking for low 14's from LB9 auto
Well the weather is changing, the tracks are closing, and its time to start thinking about winter projects. My car is a 85 trans am with LB9, 700r4, 3.27 BW. So far my best time is a 15.0 @ 91.5, which was before I had a trans rebuild (I couldnt get it to shift into 3rd at WOT before), hooker cat back, and a high flow cat. I would like to have a low 14 second 305 powered, emmisions legal car. I was thinking of purchasing Edelbrock headers, and a set of World torquer 305 heads. I did some research on running aluminum L98 heads, but I do not want to have to do any work to get them to bolt up, and I believe they need some modification to be emissions legal...so I think the Worlds will do. Also Im thinking of having a shift kit put in with a corvette servo. I would like to retain the stock cam for emissions/mileage reasons (its NOT the peanut cam). Do you think this setup would get me to the low 14's consistantly? Any other suggestions?
thanks

The headers will help a lot, good for maybe 30 more hp!
A 2200 rpm torque converter should knock 3 or 4 tenths of a second off the et, too. The two together should get you below 14.5 in the quarter

How bad would a higher stall converter hurt drivability/gas mileage? This would definetly help my p*ss poor 305 60' times. Does anyone have one installed that they would recomend?

I ran a 14.5 @96 on a peanut cammed 305 auto TPI. The main mods were 3.73 gears, Edelbrock TES, 2500 stall, single exhaust, 3" w/ cat. The intake was completely stock. I had lots of other little mods, such as 'free mods', corvette servo, shift kit, wires, coil, air foil, etc. I think the thing that helped me the most was the headers and exhaust. I went from a 15.6 to a 15.1 with the addition of the headers. Then to a 14.5 with the stall and gears. If you do put a stall in, I would not recommend one as big as a 2500. I also had really crappy tires, and the track was one of the slower ones in the area. So I probably coulda got low 14s in the right conditions.

Personally, I would not consider the World S/R Torquer 305's bolt-ons. Every mag article I've seen on them had them pocket ported before they did anything. I even emailed World for their recommendations before purchasing, and their response was "bowl work".
Get the Standard Abrasives Deluxe Porting Kit and follow their directions. Then a 3-angle valve job. Then assemble and bolt them on.
The heads, exhaust, gears, stall converter, plus ported plenum, AFPR, shorter runners, and a TPI-friendly cam will probably get you where you want to be. Assuming you can hook it up when you get done, that is.
